(WaOS) stands for Widows and Orphans Support, Since its discovery in the mid 80s’ HIV/AIDs still ravages mostly the poor neighborhoods in Uganda, and this is the case in slums and remote villages we work in. A little more women have the virus than men!. This is due mostly to the cultures which marginalized and women are not yet empowered to Take charge of their bodies, but not do what men/ husbands/ boyfriends want. Some cultures still think condom use is for prostitutes, and adulterers!.
Because of the “ego” of men, they don’t haven’t taken up the idea of voluntary testing and counseling and they continue living careless lives having multiple partners , they are rushed are rushed to hospital when they are down , very sick and helpless. During that time the various has over powered the body and nothing much can be done but wait for their soon coming death, living children as orphans and many women infected and widows, no one to tske care of them. When both parents died sooner , children have to take care of their siblings Child headed homes.
To help these vulnerable people, we are doing the following;
-
Engaging & training communities to practice sustainable agriculture, providing quality seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides among others to widows so they can sell and also feed their children.
-
We provide capital to women to start up small businesses , in the nearby markets.
-
For those with sizeable land we provided animals like goats, pigs and recently a cow ,they rare & multiply them sell some, have milk for themselves and the children while selling too for income.
-
We are looking after children who have lost their parents , meeting their basic needs and keeping them in school. The ones without any guardian to take them in are in foster families were we ensure they are comforted, loved and they feel the sence of protection, under a father and mother setting, their in we meet also their daily basic needs.
We also help out through sensitization of the masses, with radio, agitating behavioral change with young people and mostly men, to stop living careless lives and take up voluntary testing and counseling, like women do.
Organizing community testing and counseling in partnership with government local health facilities.
